What do you do when you photograph a poor child? You want to hold the moment in which he is desperate, suffer of his existence. A child without a home. A child with no one to care for him. A child that wants desperately to stay alive. This image is about my own struggle in the past, as well as what it is like for the children who live in this world. I wanted to make an image that had this quality, and I wanted to tell the story of these children, of what they go through, and how they are able to survive. I also wanted the image to be a reminder of how we can all make a difference in our community, in our city.
But if you only take his picture and go, who will make the profit? For the short term, only you. Can you help him in the meanwhile? Give him some charity, help his community. Photograph him when he’s happy about, when the contrast of happiness and poorness meet. Do this as much as you can, while you can. Then when you have saved yourself, you will not have to be ashamed about it.
It’s easier to get good money than good feelings. I have a very hard time getting good money now because it’s really tough to find a good feeling. I have a lot of money, but not much feeling.
